Robert H. Klima has been actively engaged in the practice of law in Virginia since 1978. He has a wide range of experience in many different fields of law, and most particularly Family Law, but now limits his practice to Alternative Dispute Resolution and Adoption Law.
In 2003, Mr. Klima was appointed Substitute District Court Judge for the 20th Judicial District, where he served for 12 years. He has been a Commissioner in Chancery of the Circuit Court of Prince William County since 1985. He has served as a court appointed Neutral Case Evaluator for the Circuit Court of Fauquier County since 2005. In recognition of his more than 35 years of litigation experience, Mr. Klima was one of the first class of inductees into the Virginia Trial Attorneys Hall of Fame and was named a “Top Lawyer” in a recent issue of Northern Virginia Magazine.
Mr. Klima was a pioneer in the field of Mediation in Virginia, having helped to establish the Alternative Dispute Resolution Office of Prince William County in 1991. For his work in this field, he has received awards from both the Judges of the Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court of Prince William County and the Prince William County Bar Association. Mr. Klima is certified by the Judicial Council of Virginia as a Family Law Mediator for both the Circuit Courts and Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Courts. In 2015, Mr. Klima established the Private Court of Virginia, where he serves as a Mediator and Arbitrator for many types of legal disputes.
Mr. Klima is also recognized as one of Virginia’s most experienced adoption attorneys. As a fellow of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys since 1993, he has successfully represented clients in over 2,500 adoptions. He has helped to draft some of Virginia's adoption laws and written and lectured on various adoption issues. He represents clients in step parent adoptions, agency adoptions, parental placement adoptions, interstate adoptions, foster care cases and contested adoptions.
Mr. Klima is the founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Children with Disabilities Fund International (www.thecdf.org ), a non-profit organization which seeks to assist children with disabilities living in developing countries.
He is a member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and has served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church in America.
Mr. Klima is a graduate of the University of Maryland (1974) and the George Mason University School of Law (1978).
